As moderators asked for the protester to be removed, Collins said, "So this is obviously one of Troy's supporters."
"Oh shut up," Jackson shot back. "I don't even know that kid."
"Oh, right," Collins replied.
The protester, 19-year-old Bowdoin College student Henry Elgie, told the New York Times that he does not personally know Jackson, "but I think he should be winning."
Jackson's remark drew swift condemnation from the Maine GOP, which called the comment "unacceptable behavior." In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Collins appeared to imply the remark was indicative of a larger issue Jackson has with women.
"I was struck by how reflexive the response, 'Oh, shut up,' was," Collins said. "But then I thought about the reputation Troy Jackson has in Augusta, particularly when he's dealing with women with whom he disagrees. So in some ways, it didn't surprise me."
The race between Collins and Jackson could determine which party wins control of the Senate. Most recent polls show Jackson with a razor-thin lead over Collins, who is seeking her sixth term. The Cook Political Report rates the race a "toss-up," one of seven Senate races it characterizes that way.
